As rumored in recent weeks, WISE Ventures Esports – the company behind the Call of Duty League’s Minnesota ROKKR – has launched a new organization called Version1 for other esports games and has entered Rocket League as its first title.

Version1 has signed former Cloud9 tandem Kyle “Torment” Storer and Jesus “Gimmick” Parra, with ex-Spacestation Gaming player Alexandre “AxB” Bellemare as their third. Former Cloud9 coach Jayson “Fireburner” Nunez will take the same role with Version1.

Cloud9 exited Rocket League in June as Mariano “SquishyMuffinz” Arruda headed to NRG to replace 4x RLCS World Champion Pierre “Turbopolsa” Silfver (now with Team Envy).

According to a report from The Esports Observer, Version 1 will not be specifically tied to Minnesota like the ROKKR brand is; for example, players will not be required to live and train from there. However, the organization plans to tap into its local fanbase for events and activations.

“For a long time, we instinctively felt like Rocket League would make a lot of sense and check a lot of boxes. And as we started really doing our due diligence on it over the past few months, it became more and more clear,” WISE Esports Ventures COO Brett Diamond told The Esports Observer. “For us and where we are now it’s a great compliment to Call of Duty – at a basic level it’s a game that’s incredibly easy to understand, it’s cars playing soccer…from a business standpoint, it has that potential for mass appeal, and the numbers behind it already are very real.”
